Job summary

An exciting opportunity has risen for a Principal Infrastructure/ Data Engineer to join the Health Education England (HEE) National Data Service. This team is responsible for a joined up approach to the development, acquisition management, and use of data across the organisation.

To be successful in this role, the post holder will work closely with developers within the Data Service and across HEE to identify infrastructure requirements for the National Data Warehouse.

You will also have intensive skills and experience in:

  • DevOps process automation (we use Azure DevOps)
  • Configuring, deploying and managing Azure data infrastructure using PowerShell and ARM templates.
  • Microsoft Azure services, particularly with reference to cloud data warehouse architecture, networking and security
  • Database development using SSMS version 17 or higher
  • ETL configuration / development / deployment (Azure Data Factory / SSIS, plus support for repeatable analytical pipelines)
  • Configuration / deployment of Azure analysis services
  • Data modelling / validation
  • DBA skills (server management, SQL jobs management, scheduling, scaling, backup / restore, security, account management / permissions, server objects, replication)
  • Source control / DataOps (preferably Azure DevOps/Git)
  • Collaboration tools (e.g. MS Teams / Slack / JIRA)

Main duties of the job

The Principal Infrastructure / Data Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Development and maintenance of the HEE National Data Warehouse infrastructure in the Azure cloud using DevOps methods (Bicep, ARM templates, PowerShell etc.)
  • Maintenance, testing and extension of our Geo-Redundant disaster recovery plan / data centre infrastructure migration
  • Upgrade SharePoint data storage to Azure DataLake
  • Extension of the Azure Managed Instance solution architecture to cope with predicted additional capacity demands(scaling, additional storage, housekeeping etc.)
  • Azure Active Directory / network integration
  • Security hardening of the National Data Warehouse components (adapting the current configuration to use private endpoints, managed identities, service principals etc where necessary)
  • Collaboration with external consultancy on the production / development of test and prod environments to support data science / machine learning activities (DataBricks, Azure ML services etc.)
  • The incorporation of metadata management services, linking with NHSD’s Collibra product
  • The incorporation of a data cataloguing tool to facilitate discovery of / access to data (solution tbc)
  • Staff training and documentation to ensure resilience of services / configuration
