Theatre Support Worker- Band 2

The role will involve providing circulating assistance to the scrub team working in Theatres, escorting patients to Theatres and checking them in, housekeeping and cleaning duties and any other duties delegated by the Theatre Co-ordinator and Band 7 Senior Practitioners

In return, we will offer a competency based training programme, a mentor and ongoing support so that you will be able to pick up the skills, knowledge and experience needed to carry out the TSW role independently.

Main duties of the job

To assist in the delivery of patient/client care and participate in the safe and effectivemanagement of theatre service under the supervision of registered nurses andODPs.This could effectively be in all areas of the Department including the patientreception areas, scrub, anaesthetics and recovery.The Theatre Support Worker (TSW) will contribute in a variety of activities of theatre patient/client care to the level of experience and assessed competence that he/she has acquired. The service users come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and the TSW must be able to communicate effectively. They will support the Theatre team to maintain and ensure a clean, safe environment for patient care activities. This will include assistingin a range of domestic/environmental arrangements including some cleaning, keeping the corridors tidy and free of clutter, reporting maintenance problems and helping to monitor repairs.Furthermore they will be expected to assist the domestics to maintain the upkeep of the kitchen, coffee room, changing rooms and patient reception area.

1. You will at all times work under the supervision of the RegisteredNurse/ODP in charge of the shift and will be accountable to the RegisteredNurse/ODP you are working with and to the Senior Theatre Practitioner.2. You will work to the level of your experience, assessed competence and skills acquired within the post.3. You will require immediate and direct supervision in areas of unfamiliar work. You should not undertake any task that you are unfamiliar with.

4. Recognise and maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients/clients and their records.5. Assist in the collecting of, admitting of/checking-in of patients to the department as required following agreed protocols, confirming the patients identity and completing the necessary documentation. The registered practitioner will check this.6. Ensure clarity in communicating with patients/clients and their relatives as well as other team members and in answering questions within the sphere of ones own knowledge. Report changes in patients condition to the registered nurse/ ODP on duty and participate in shift hand over to ensure effective continuity of care.7. Contribute to the ongoing support of patients/clients and others significant to them, enabling patients/clients to maintain their interests, identity and emotional well-being.8. Welcome patients/clients, their families and other visitors to the department. and introduce them to the facilities and services provided.9. Answer the telephone on a clear, friendly, helpful and professional manner. Take any messages accurately and refer to a registered nurse/ODP as necessary.10. Demonstrate a caring approach to patients/clients, their families and visitors and to have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills.11. Assist the patient prior to surgery, maintaining patient confidentiality and dignity at all times.12. Maintain a clean, safe environment, communicating and working effectively with the Perioperative team. This includes participating in Pre-procedural briefings and STOP Checks, with all members of the multidisciplinary team (to maximise patient safety and minimise risk).

13. Assist with the positioning, transferring and escorting of patients, in line with Theatre and Trust policies, e.g. Escort guidelines. Moving and Hand lingguidelines.14. Once training and assessment of competence is obtained, carrying out tasks and planned care as designated by a registered nurse/ODP.15. Contribute to the promotion of equality for all individuals by supporting anti-discriminatory practice, patient/client choice and acknowledging individuals personal beliefs and identity.16 Maintain personal and organizational standards of health, safety and security, e.g. following the Theatre Infection Control policy.17. Position and connect equipment as required by the scrub team, disconnect and safely remove equipment as required.18. Ensure proficiency with equipment before use in accordance with local policy and manufacturers instructions.19. Prepare sterile trolleys and insure all instrumentation is accounted for (in conjunction with registered staff pre/intra and post-operatively.20. Appropriately respond in the event of a health/clinical emergency e.g. cardiac arrest/fire evacuation etc.21. Participate as a member of the Perioperative team, carrying out pre-procedural counts of swabs, instruments and needles. This will be checked with a registered practitioner as per department policy.22. Assisting in the measurement/recording of fluid output.

23. Safely handling, recording and dispatching specimens, and used instruments in line with local policy.24. Disposing of waste as per trust policy.25. Undertaking the circulating role, utilising communication skills, preparing theenvironment and equipment, and acting as a link between the surgical team, and other parts of theatres (and the rest of the Trust).26. Appropriately cleaning and clearing away of all theatre furniture and equipment.(stack systems, microscopes, trolleys, tourniquets, laser machines, theatre tables etc)27. Checking and preparing the theatre, after floor cleaning between lists, or at the end of the day.28. Liaise with the Theatre Co-ordinator and theatre staff in the ordering and handling of Equipment/instruments /supplies for theatre use.29. Assist the equipment Manager and Theatre Procurement Administrative Officer(Higher Level) in regard to the management of equipment and stock/non-stock supplies in the Department.30. Assist the domestic in keeping the Kitchen, Team Rooms, Changing Rooms and Reception areas clean and tidy.

31. Manage his/her time effectively and perform allocated tasks within a reasonabletime frame, knowing when to seek support, assistance and advice from other team members.32. Undertake general clerical duties that may be associated with the smooth running of the department. This will include data entry following training.33. Assist in the maintenance and department equipment andmonitoring/replenishing stock levels, e.g. equipment, HSDU, etc.34.
