NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is the largest healthcare system in the UK, with an annual revenue budget of c. £3.2 billion, employing around 38,000 staff. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of around 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included. The geographical area covered is diverse; from the major city of Glasgow, large and small towns, villages and some rural districts; and encompasses 6 Health and Social Care Partnerships areas from East Dunbartonshire to Inverclyde.

Our GP out-of-hours service is a fundamental part of the healthcare service provided by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde supporting those who require medical assistance when GP practices are not available. The service is delivered from sites which are geographically spread across the Board area and is currently delivered from core centres located at both our Ambulatory Care Hospitals at the Victoria Hospital (south Glasgow ) and Stobhill Hospital (north Glasgow) and at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (Renfrewshire) and the Vale of Leven Hospital ( Dunbartonshire) .

Joining an established team of both salaried and sessional GPs who work in the Primary Care out-of-hours service you will become a key and influential part of an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team of clinical professionals and support staff working together to provide a range of integrated services to the public across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The quality and safety of out-of-hours care is extremely important to ensure we provide patients with access to consistent and high quality standards of care. Ensuring we continue to staff our service to an appropriate level is a key priority for the NHS Board to ensure these high quality service are sustained.

We are now seeking to recruit a number of new Salaried GPs to join our existing NHS Greater Glasgow and Clydes GP outofhours service offering professional rewarding roles for candidates interested in both salaried and sessional work.

It is a very exciting time to be joining the largest NHS Board in Scotland as we are well underway with a planned series of improvements to urgent primary care services. This includes the recent introduction of a new appointments system designed to help create a more robust, reliable and sustainable service by reducing waiting times, enabling discrete appointments and improving access to GP out-of-hours services while also ensuring social distancing can be observed at our urgent primary care centres.

 In addition to having a scheduled appointment system, patients will also now have the opportunity for telephone consultations with our Out of Hours GP team via Attend Anywhere, which allows for virtual consultations to take place which means patients will have access healthcare without having to travel to an urgent primary care centre.

The Majority of rota spaces available cover the weekend rota.

Successful candidates for these roles will be motivated to provide excellent patient care as well as supporting in the operational and strategic planning for the development of the emergency care service where appropriate, and further development of the service.

As a GP working in our out-of-hours service you will have a highly varied and rewarding role responsible for a range of services including:

  • Telephone Triage for patients who have been referred to the service
  • Face to face at base – Face to face consultations which are carried out at the Primary Care Centre
  • Home visiting sessions – carried out with a driver 
  • You will be expected to work closely with and support clinical colleagues, including medical and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The focus of the job is out of hours primary care but there is scope for GPs to continue a practice commitment and with ongoing service development, to contribute to a wide range of day time specialist services (such as Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Intensive Care or Clinical Governance.

     Whether you want to consider full or part time hours we have a range of posts available starting at a minimum of 12 hours per week offered on an annualised hours arrangement. There is a great deal of flexibility and hours would be negotiated with the successful candidates.

    Successful candidates will be expected to work a minimum of 1 weekend in 4 as part of their agreed regular rota.

    Due to the nature of the GP out of hours service the majority of working time will be out of hours 6pm-8am Monday to Thursday and 6pm Friday to 8am Monday including rostered Public/Bank Holidays. The contracted hours are worked in accordance with the out of hours roster on an annualised hours arrangement contracted hours represent an average commitment, but the salaried GP will receive a stable monthly salary.

     It does not have to be always overnight work, there are short twilight sessions throughout the week and short morning and afternoon sessions over the weekend. Whether you are seeking regular work or just the occasional session, you will have the opportunity to choose when you would like to work in order to fit in with your lifestyle and professional commitments. There may be an opportunity for additional shifts if desired over and above contracted hours. Learning opportunities, training and appraisal will be part of the commitment and will take place in hours.

    As part of the onboarding process for successful candidates this will include a Job Planning discussion with the Clinical Director. The agreed Job Plan will be reviewed after 1 year in post .

    Consideration will also be given to applications from those who wish to consider fixed term working, job share or flexible working arrangements.

    We are really interested in speaking to GP’s who are either established or newly qualified either way we will guide you through it and listen to your requirements and do our best to match them. 

    As a salaried GP you can expect a benefits package which also includes agenrous salalry package, up to 6 weeks holiday per year and 10 day public holidays (pro rata less than full time hours). Access to an Occupational Sick Pay Scheme and the NHS Pension Scheme. A generous relocation package up to £8000 to support relocation into the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area if necessary.

    ** All GPs wishing to work within NHSScotland are required to be included in the Performers List of the Health Board they are providing services.
