Our new post for a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry will be at the vanguard of all we do for patients, helping to shape and develop the service over the coming years. We are looking for an individual with plenty of drive and vision, to go along with their much needed clinical skills, someone who will have the opportunity to really make a tangible difference to the population served by our Health Board.
Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB Community Dental Service is looking to appoint a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry on a permanent, full time contract. They will provide dental care across all Health Boards localities. The post will be based in Dewi Sant Hospital but the successful candidate will be required to work in all of our clinics across the Health Board.
The CDS is involved in the outreach teaching of final year undergraduates and the clinical supervision of Year 1 and 2 dentists on the Dental Core Training schemes. In addition the CDS runs Welsh Government oral health improvement initiatives and epidemiology surveys in these areas. The successful applicant will join a dynamic team providing the full range of community dentistry working alongside other dentists, orthodontists, a paediatric specialist and a dental therapist.
A driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential as there will be occasions when the post holder will be required to move between fixed clinics, mobile dental units, or provide domiciliary care which requires the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
Main duties of the job
The post holder has the responsibility to provide Special Care Dentistry for vulnerable adults within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The post holder may be asked to lead in the development and provision of oral care for vulnerable people in all areas of Special Care Dentistry across CTM. The post holder will support and progress research and development for the Community Dental Service.
The post holder will be expected to provide treatment to a wide range of patients including treatment under GA, conscious sedation, emergency access sessions and special care dentistry for all ages.
As a senior employee of the Health Board the post holder will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

To provide effective clinical leadership to all staff employed within the CDS
To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies
To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Board’s service plans
To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, CDS or the Health Board.
About us
The Community Dental Service in CTMUHB is a Salaried Dental Service providing Oral Health Care Services to vulnerable client groups in line with the Welsh Health Circular 2022/022 (Dental Services for Vulnerable People and the Role of the Community Dental Service).
The CDS provides dental care for vulnerable adults and children including adults with learning disabilities, severe mental illness, complex medical conditions, physical disabilities, vulnerable older people, the homeless, substance misusers, asylum seekers, refugees, as well as children in special schools and looked after children.
The CDS provides dental care in accessible clinics, mobile dental units, and on a domiciliary basis, along with oral rehabilitation GA lists in Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. Most of the clinics are equipped with accessible facilities and equipment to provide Special Care Dentistry, some clinics also offer dental sedation. The facilities include a bariatric dental chair, intermediate dental chairs and hoists. Referrals are received via e-referral from GDPs. The CDS also accepts referrals from other health professionals where appropriate.
