Job responsibilities

To provide a safe environment whereby patients can access care, discuss their concerns, and ask questions . Provide information, advice, treatment, health promotion and education for patients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, providing support and onward referral as required.

To provide time limited 1:1 work for patients specifically around risk reduction and behaviour change, using evidenced based tools such as motivational interviewing and behavioural change models, which promotes good sexual health and minimises risk.

Assess all factors which might negatively affect a patients sexual health and refer to appropriate specialist services for example: psychology/psychiatry and alcohol and drug services as required.

To provide ongoing support and advice for those with associated concerns for example: sexual assault, termination of pregnancy, sexual identity, relationship, and psychosexual issues.

Always ensure that the clients identify, and the confidential nature of the information obtained is in accordance with current legislation, and NHS and Trust policies.

Facilitate the recall of patients with untreated infections or those in need of follow-up and/or test of cure. To exchange relevant information about patients and contacts with other sexual health clinics as necessary.

To be competent in the management of under 18-year-olds and vulnerable adults working within Fraser Guidelines and mental capacity assessments and liaising with the multi-disciplinary team and CCS and local safeguarding teams/services as appropriate.

To independently assess, plan and evaluate programmes of care with use of Patient Group Directions (PGDs) or if you have a non-medical prescribing qualification, you will be required to practice as a prescriber as part of this role. To supply treatments to patients as prescribed.

To perform phlebotomy as required in accordance with Trust and service guidelines and standard operating procedures and be able to perform Point of Care HIV testing, where delivered in accordance with service guidelines and standard operation procedures if relevant to the locality.

To lead and particulate in sexual health promotion work within the service.

To work alongside the HIV specialist team, providing clinician and patient support.

To work within the Society of Sexual Health Advisors (SSHA) guidance.

Develop or contribute to the writing, review and updating of Trust and Service policies, guidance, standard operating procedures and other such documents.

  • Experience

  • Experience of working in sexual health (Contraception, GUM, HIV or equivalent)
  • Able to demonstrate competency in supply of treatments by Patient Group Directions (PGDs) or willingness to undertake
  • Ability to educate users/patients, staff, other professionals, statutory & voluntary agencies
  • Desirable

  • Experienced in caring for people living in difficult and chaotic social situations
  • Experience of leading a team and managing their day to day activities to ensure smooth running of a service
  • Skills
