TheLeeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is the largest NHS Trust in the UK and is theRegional Centre for Neurosurgery Surgery. The eleven Consultant Neurosurgeonsin Leeds currently perform approximately 3000 procedures per year and thedepartment offers the full range of neurosurgical training and experience.

Weare seeking two Locum Trust Doctors for a fixed term appointment for 6 monthsin the first instance with a possible renewal for a further 6 months.

TheDepartment is led by 12 Consultants.They all have comprehensive general Neurosurgical commitment as well asparticular subspecialty interests.

Thejunior staff consists of 9 SPR/STR and 12 SHO level trainees.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the clinical service,and should have experience at the level of ST4 onwards and of on call.

TheDepartment of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive neurosurgical service tothe million people of West and North Yorkshire. The Neurosurgical Department is within thenew development at The Leeds General Infirmary at Leeds. This is an amalgamation of the previousseparate units at the Leeds Infirmary and the Pinderfields General Hospital,Wakefield.

Thecentralised Neurosurgical Department has approximately 65 adult beds with a7-bedded dedicated Neuro-intensive Care Unit as well as an 8 bedded High DependencyUnit. There are 3 operating theatres, 1dedicated to emergency surgery 24 hours per day. There are separate beds and intensive carefacilities for Paediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery.

TheNeurosurgical Department has close links with the other neurosciences,particularly the Department of Neuro-radiology where there is high expertise inimaging and interventional neuroradiology.The Department has 2 CT scanners, 3 MRI scanners, digital subtractionangiography and CT angiography.

Neuro-anaesthesiais provided at a specialist level. TheNeuro-anaesthetists provide support to both the High Dependency and IntensiveCare Unit.

Thereis a comprehensive Paediatric Neurosciences Department with 5 PaediatricNeurologists, 4 specialist Neurosurgeons and full Oncology services.

DUTIES OF THE POST

a) In-patient and Out-patient Duties

The Higher Trust Doctor will assist in the overall running of the department and ensure that the clinical care is appropriately handled with the Senior House Officers under the leadership of the Consultant. Clinical commitments include up to two out patient sessions and 3 operating sessions per week.

The post holder will participate in the emergency on-call rota with prospective cover.

b) Teaching

The Higher Trust Doctor will be involved in the teaching of undergraduates, postgraduates, the junior trainees as well as the nursing and para-medical staff.

c) Clinical Administration

The Higher Trust Doctor will assist in ensuring that ward admissions and discharges are satisfactory arranged and that summaries are promptly sent. He/she will also partake in the audit programmes and the weekly academic meetings.

d) Study and Training

This is a non-training post

Within the Department there are regular weekly academic Neuroscience meetings as well as weekly Neuro-radiological and Neuro-pathology meetings. There is also a monthly audit meeting of morbidity, mortality and specific audit topics.

There is a medical library in the Postgraduate Centre with appropriate computer linkage for literature searches. The Clinical Fellow will be encouraged to take part in the on-going research projects and every encouragement will be given to any individual projects.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The applicant should be able to participate in the on call rota, outpatient clinics and operating lists with experience equivalent at least to a UK trainee at ST4 level.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

This is a non-training post but the applicant will be encouraged to participate in the departmental education programme.
