Jobs For Electricians

Are you interested in jobs for electricians? This page will look at everything you need to know, from how to become an electrician to where you can find electrician jobs in the UK.

Electricity has long been one of the essential elements in our society. We use electricity for heating, lighting, and cooling, and for operating appliances like computers, electronics, and machinery. We’ve seen a massive shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) too, with a whopping 20.5% increase in market share for EVs in 2022 alone.

It’s clear that electricity will continue to become more and more of a necessity in our society. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the demand for electricians is also on the rise. So, there’s no time like the present to be looking for jobs for electricians in the UK.

What Do Electricians Do?

Electricians fit, service and repair all types of electrical equipment, machines and wires. Working with electricity can be extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. So, in order to work as an electrician in the UK, you must possess the correct certifications and qualifications.

Salaries for electricians range from £18,000 to £42,000 per year based on the level of expertise and experience. You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week, with on-call hours possible depending on the specific role.

How to Become an Electrician

There are a number of ways to become an electrician:

College Course

College courses can provide you with some of the knowledge and practical skills necessary to become an electrician. However, it will also be necessary to get practical work experience in order to become fully qualified. A college course could provide you with an entry route into an apprenticeship or trainee role.

Some examples of relevant college courses you could take include:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Access to Building Services Engineering (Electrical)
  • Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation
  • T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction

Another advantage of doing a college course is that you’ll have the opportunity to build a strong network of contacts who can potentially assist you in finding employment down the line.

There are a number of apprenticeships you can do which will provide you with all the knowledge, training, and experience necessary to become a qualified electrician. These apprenticeships are:

  • Installation and Maintenance Electrician Advanced Apprenticeship (42 months)
  • Domestic Electrician Advanced Apprenticeship (36 months)
  • Armed Forces Electrician Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships can take between 36 and 42 months to complete, but you’ll be ready to enter the workforce once they’re completed.

Direct Application

The option also exists to apply directly for jobs as an electrician. Of course, you will need to have the relevant experience and qualifications in order to be considered for positions. Relevant experience would include building services or electrical engineering.

If you already have at least 5 years of experience working as an electrician but still don’t have your Level 3 qualification, there is a way to have your experience recognised through the Experienced Worker Assessment.

It’s available across England, Northern Ireland and Wales from EAL and City & Guilds training centres.

Electrician Skills

The following skills and knowledge will be of great benefit to you when training to become an electrician:

  • the ability to use, repair, and maintain machines and tools
  • maths knowledge for understanding technical plans
  • thoroughness and attention to detail
  • problem-solving skills
  • knowledge of building and construction
  • strong initiative
  • the ability to work well with your hands and use equipment safely
  • good communication and customer service skills for working with colleagues and clients
  • the ability to perform basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device

Many of these skills can be acquired during training, so don’t worry if you don’t already possess them all.
