Jobs for Ex-Headteachers

Are you a headteacher looking for a career change? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We’ll take a look at the best jobs for ex-headteachers so you can start planning the next chapter of your career.

The job of a headteacher is to manage schools and create the right conditions for children and fellow teachers to achieve their best. As a headteacher, you are responsible for areas such as pupils and staff, school finances, the school’s systems and processes, standards and the continuous improvement of the school. Headship can be immensely rewarding and, for many, it’s a career goal.

However, leadership roles can be highly stressful and tend to take their toll over time. It’s not uncommon for headteachers to leave their profession in search of something different. Fortunately, the skills and experience gained over the years are highly transferable to any number of roles in a variety of sectors.

Jobs For Former Head Teachers

Headteachers are highly qualified and come with many years of work experience under their belts. This means that if you’re ready for a career change, there are plenty of alternative jobs for headteachers that you can easily transition to.

Writer

With so much life and work experience to your name, why not consider putting pen to paper and making a career change to a writer? A career as a writer will be much less stressful and will also give you the opportunity to share your wealth of experiences and learnings with others. Or perhaps you’d like to write about something completely different from education, such as a cookbook or a travel blog. The world is your oyster when it comes to writing. Just be sure to have a plan in place of what you want to write about before you begin.

Leadership Coach

Use your extensive leadership skills to help individuals and groups develop their own skills as leaders. You’ll develop training programmes related to leadership development, coaching, communication skills, and conflict resolution among others. Use your skills in communication, organisation, empathy, time management, and problem-solving to help others become better leaders in their areas of work.

It will be necessary to retrain by completing certified coach training by the International Coach Federation (the ICF).

Ofsted Inspector

The chances are that you were visited by an Ofsted inspector (Her Majesty’s Inspector or HMI) during your time as a teacher or head teacher. Their job is to inspect and report on the quality of places of education and learning, including children’s social care services. This is a common ‘next step’ in the career path of many head teachers, especially those who want to remain close to the education sector.

Teacher Training Lecturer

If teaching is your passion, perhaps you could consider teaching the next generation of teachers. Giving lectures in colleges or universities, you’ll impart your wisdom on teaching methods, pedagogy, educational psychology, educational policy and leadership, among many other topics.

In order to become a lecturer, it is necessary to have a PhD. But your experience as a teacher and head teacher will make for a smooth transition into lecturing.
