Job overview

The post holder is responsible for continued development of evidence based department and nursing practice within the Head and Neck Care Group, focussing predominantly within Ophthalmology 
Directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. They will use their expertise to provide support and act as a resource for senior and junior staff and members of the multidisciplinary team, demonstrating a 
commitment to the service philosophy through a framework of Clinical Governance.
The post holder will facilitate both formal and informal education, ensuring staff remain up-to-date with mandatory training and clinical competencies. They will also support the induction and 
development of new starters, students and volunteers, working collaboratively with senior nursing and multi-disciplinary management teams to promote a learning culture.
The post holder will support the Senior Sister /Senior Charge Nurse in ensuring the highest standard and quality of nursing care is delivered. Lead a team of qualified, unqualified team members and support all staff including student learners by taking charge / co-ordinate areas/departments. 
The post holder will work in partnership with other educators and lead educators within the Head and Neck care group to ensure collaborative working and approach. They must balance service needs 
with keeping their own clinical competencies and education up to date. The post holder must have experience within an ophthalmic setting.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

Practice, education, training, development and staff support
Plan, deliver and evaluate clinical training and education sessions for multidisciplinary staff within ophthalmology outpatients and some in patient area’s, ensuring it in in line with Head and Neck care group 
and the Trusts approach.
Ensure staff are compliant with mandatory training, including but not limited to: Basic Life Support (CPR), infection prevention, safeguarding, and PALMS.
Facilitate on-the-job learning and supervision, tailored to various roles and clinical specialisms.
Support student nurses, trainees and volunteers on placement within the department, acting as a mentor/assessor where appropriate.
Organise and deliver induction programmes for all new staff across sites.
Identify learning needs through feedback, observation, audit and appraisal processes.
To maintain one’s own clinical competency by working a clinical shift each week.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 12 months from the commencement of the start date due to the post being part of an organisational change. Essential criteria

  • RGN Level one NMC or equivalent
  • Continuous professional development
  • First degree or evidence of working towards one (demonstrating graduate attributes)
  • Experience

  • Relevant experience at AFC Band 5 / 6 in Ophthalmology care setting (Staff Nurse, ODP, OSP)
  • Ability to lead, motivate and develop a professional team
  • Completed NMC recognised mentor qualification or equivalent
  • Experience using electronic training systems (e.g., PALMS)
  • Participation in audit or quality improvement
  • Desirable criteria

  • Ward / Unit level managerial experience – co-ordinator role
  • Current LEM experience
  • Experience supporting appraisals and PDPs
  • Skills and Knowledge

    Essential criteria

  • Evidence of relevant post basic training and continuous professional development, ie. Mentorship or Educator programmes
  • Ability to communicate effectively including active listening, writing, and verbally, with individuals on a one-to-one basis, with groups, and the Multidisciplinary Team
  • Good understanding of the national strategic context of the NHS
  • Excellent performance management skills
  • Highly developed leadership skills with excellent interpersonal skills – ability to form positive relationships at all levels
  • Clinical expert in one of the following areas Outpatient, Theatre or ED.
  • Motivated, innovative, receptive to change
  • Ability to work flexibly to cover the needs of the service/s.
  • Evidence of high-level commitment to professional development, training and education
  • Good understanding of information technology/ data bases
  • Experience in developing and use of integrated care pathways
