Jobs for Bricklayers

Are you interested in jobs for bricklayers? We’ll take you through everything you need to know, from becoming a bricklayer to where you can find bricklayer jobs in the UK.

Bricklaying is one of the oldest skill sets, dating back as far as the Egyptians 6,000 years ago. Yet it continues to be a skill in high demand. And with the construction industry’s steady annual growth rate of 3.7%, there’s no better time to be looking for bricklayer jobs in the UK.

What Do Bricklayers Do?

Bricklayers work predominantly on construction sites. Their work involves:

  • setting out basic structures
  • building brick and block walling
  • laying domestic drainage
  • placing and finishing concrete
  • rendering surfaces

They lay the foundation of buildings, constructing and repairing walls, partitions, arches, chimney stacks, etc. Bricklayers will often do restoration projects like brickwork and masonry as well.

As a bricklayer, you can expect to work on all types of construction sites, from residential homes to commercial developments. Salaries range from £17,000 to £40,000 per year based on your level of expertise.

How To Become A Bricklayer

There are three different ways to get into bricklaying:

College Course

Some examples of college courses you can take include:

  • Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills
  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Level 2 Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • T Level in On-Site Construction

Not only will you learn the skills needed for the job, but you’ll also build a strong network of contacts who can help you find employment.

If you’re interested in bricklayer jobs for career changers, a number of colleges and private training organisations offer part-time or shorter courses. This will allow you to get an idea of what the job would be like before making any big decisions.

Apprenticeship

A bricklaying intermediate apprenticeship will usually take about 2 years to complete. An apprenticeship will allow you to get on-the-job experience and training from professional bricklayers. On top of that, you’ll spend time with a college or training provider. The entry requirements for an apprenticeship include some GCSEs, usually English and maths, or equivalent.

Work

Another way of getting into bricklaying is by working as a construction site labourer. By working with a bricklaying ‘gang’, you’ll be able to receive on-the-job training to become a bricklayer. However, you must obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or equivalent in advance in order to be able to train and work on a construction site.

Skills of a Bricklayer

The following skills and knowledge will be of great benefit to you when becoming a bricklayer:

  • basic knowledge of building and construction
  • good communication skills
  • able to work well with others
  • flexible and adaptable
  • able to work well with your hands
  • physical skills like strength, balance and coordination
  • good time-keeping skills
  • comfortable with basic technology

If you don’t already possess all of these skills, don’t worry. With ongoing training, you’ll pick them up as you go.
