Carpenter Career Change

Carpenters possess a wide range of skills that transfer well to other careers. And there’s no shortage of carpenter career change jobs. Over the years they’ll have gained experience on-site with drafting blueprints and installing and decorating hardware. Plus, since they’re used to collaborating with other trades, they understand how all the cogs of a construction site work.

This means that if you’re a carpenter looking for a career change, there are a number of options at your disposal. We’ll take a look at some of the best jobs for former carpenters so you have all the information you need.

Alternative Jobs for Carpenters

Some alternative jobs for carpenters may use similar processes and require the same skills as carpentry. This will make the transition process easier. On the other hand, some jobs may require more of the transferable skills acquired throughout your career and fewer of the hard skills associated with carpentry. Either way, your experience in the role will benefit you in the following carpenter career change jobs.

Site Manager

If you’ve had enough of working with your hands but still want to work in the construction environment, then a job as a site manager could be the right choice for you. You’ll swap the tools for a clipboard and a pen, overseeing the day-to-day runnings of the site. Your main job is to ensure that building projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget. Liaising with architects, tradespeople and surveyors, you’ll use your management skills to keep the project on track. This involves making sure that the right staff, machinery, and materials are on-site to get the job done. It’s quite often a client-facing role, so be prepared to bring your best customer service skills to the table.

Logistics Manager

For those of you who’d like to step away from the construction environment but are still interested in a managerial role, why not look into a role as a logistics manager. You are in charge of coordinating a company or organisation’s supply chain. This can also include maintaining inventory, resolving problems with transportation, tracking products or shipping routes and warehouse inspection. Logistics managers are often responsible for safety protocols, making sure the people who work in their supply chain follow proper safety procedures.

Solar Installer

If you’re not ready to put down your tools just yet but fancy taking a step away from carpentry, how about a role as a solar installer. Your job will involve installing residential or commercial solar panels. With an increase in the demand for green energy, many private households and businesses are turning to solar to avoid the high costs of electricity. As a result, there’s no shortage of work for solar installers.

Carpentry Teacher

Many carpenters will have worked with apprentices throughout their careers. In all likelihood, you’ll have started off as an apprentice too. If carpentry is in your veins and you can’t imagine a life without it, why not consider passing on your wisdom as a carpentry teacher? Your job would involve teaching carpentry to students usually in a college setting, monitoring their development throughout the course period. You would also have to ensure students follow the appropriate safety protocols and perform on-site assessments using a range of methods.
