Homeless Jobs
A job can be a route out of homelessness and help people to get back on their feet. In this guide, we look at homeless jobs and the potential ways that people who are homeless can still find a role that is suitable and a chance to earn money.
Saly, both young people and vulnerable people are at risk of becoming homeless. There are some organisations out there offering support for those who have become homeless or are at risk of experiencing homelessness.
Homeless People – Obstacles to Getting a Job
There are many reasons why it can be difficult for people with no fixed abode to find work. Being homeless with a job is possible, though, if you are able to overcome some of these obstacles and get help from the relevant charities and organisations.
Obstacles to getting a job for homeless people include :
- Having no fixed address so it can be difficult to have a letter delivered. This is an issue when trying to set up interviews with employers.
- Homeless individuals may not have access to a computer or the internet, which means that they are unable to apply for jobs online (many positions will require this).
- Homeless job seekers may struggle with preparing for an interview. Homeless people may not have access to a shower or clean clothes for an interview.
- Homeless job seekers who have children can’t take the risk of losing their benefits. So, even if they do manage to get a part time role, they may not be able to take it on.
- Homeless job seekers can struggle with mental health and a lack of motivation because their situation is so difficult. Homeless job seekers should try and keep motivated by seeing the work as helping them get back on track towards a better life.
Homeless people almost always need some form of support to get a job. This is why charities and homeless organisations such as Shelter can be so important. They may be able to give homeless people access to the support they need to find and apply for a job, and a place to access post.
Funding and Support
There is support available for homeless people who want to find work. Homeless charities and organisations can offer advice, help with job applications and even provide funding in some cases. Homeless grants are something that many places will also be able to help you apply for if you need financial assistance when looking for work. Homeless shelters may also provide you with somewhere to stay while you search.
There are many organisations that can help homeless people find a job, including:
- Shelter
- The Prince’s Trust
- Jobcentre Plus
- YMCA Homelessness to Employment Programme
It is possible for homeless people to get a job, especially with the support of relevant charities.
