Train Driver
For many, a career as a train driver is a life-long dream. Train drivers operate diesel or electric trains transporting goods or passengers. Bus/Coach Driver
If you’d prefer to stick to the roads, perhaps a career behind the wheel of a bus or coach would be a better choice for you. Transport for Wales hires both bus and coach drivers.
Bus drivers work on more local routes, transporting passengers from A to B while giving out tickets and dealing with payments. On the other hand, coach drivers can expect to work on longer-distance routes, including some trips overseas.
In order to become a bus or coach driver for TfW, you’ll need to have a full valid licence, a Category D licence and you’ll need to pass the CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) licence. An Intermediate Level Apprenticeship is a great place to start.
Training will be on the job for all qualified bus/coach drivers. Salary ranges from £21,500 to £33,500 depending on the level of experience. You can expect to work 40 hours per week which will include evenings, weekends, bank holidays and night shifts. Currently, the demand for bus drivers is much higher than that for train drivers.
